- A tall, upright cylindrical structure, typically of stone, that supports a building or serves as a monument; also, a vertical division of text or data on a page or screen. Related: pillar, post, shaft, monolith.
- DORIC /ˈdɒrɪk/ · adjective
- Relating to ancient Doris in Greece or the Dorian Greeks, especially their plain, sturdy style of classical architecture characterized by simple columns without bases and plain capitals. Also used to describe the Doric dialect of ancient Greek or, in Scotland, the broad Scots vernacular. Related: classical, Grecian, austere, rustic.
